Because these old Toyotas are extremely simple and every part is overbuilt for the job it’s designed for, and the engines produce around 100 HP. It’s hard to break them because they just don’t have enough power to break themselves. They’re tough as nails, and they’ll get you anywhere you need to go, but they sure aren’t fast or powerful. That’s my biggest gripe with my 1990 Toyota, which I love otherwise. It’s *slow* and I wouldn’t dare try to tow with it.

It’s not an American V8. In the states these trucks had the Toyota 22R gas engine, and in most of the rest of the world they had the Toyota 2L diesel, which you can see in the video.
Toyota has produced plenty of diesels. They are the parent company of Hino Motors, which produces diesel heavy trucks and buses, and they’ve been making diesels for their cars and light trucks for ages. They just don’t sell them in America.

i still don’t think that anything beats a old (late 60′s-mid 70′s) American Diesel’s, i know people that haven’t done more then change the oil and tires on those in over 400,000 miles of ranch and construction work and still wouldn’t ever trade it in for a new truck… i own a 78 scout that i rolled down a mountain into a two story log cabin, the scout started right up, the cabin needed over $5,000 of repairs.

@Tweekin0ut its not. they actually got in trouble for that… the city found out when the show was broadcasted… bbc had to pay a shitload of money for screwing the tree (it was 30 years old). before that the town authorities thought it was just vandalism. funny in way, isnt it?
