Hyundai Recalls 190,000 Elantras Sedans Over Faulty Airbags

Hyundai Motor Company has recalled 190,000 vehicles sold in the US market over airbag-related defects according to a US government agency. According to the Web site for the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Hyundai issued an recall of about 190,000 Elantra sedans sold between 2006 and 2008 in the US to repair a defect in airbag sensors.

The recalled vehicles include 96,000 Elantra sedans sold in 2006 and 2007 that were found to have additional defects in the airbag control system, which could improperly deploy the driver's side airbag, according to the post on the NHTSA's Web site.

Hyundai expects to recall 190,000 Elantra passenger cars sold between 2006 and 2008 in the US with defective airbag sensors. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Hyundai have issued a recall for 2007-2009 Elantra sedans for an airbag system sensor that could cause the airbags to open incorrectly, increasing the risk of injury to smaller passengers, especially children in the event of an accident.

The 2007-2009 Hyundai Elantra is equipped with an airbag system that:

* Senses whether there is a child or adult in the passenger seat so in the event of a small child riding in the front passenger seat, the airbag will not deploy as they can be more damaging than helpful

* Prevents airbags from opening unnecessarily when there is no one in the passenger seat

The problem with the systems being recalled in the Hyundai Elantra is that

* The "brain" of the weight sensing system is housed under the center console, between the front seats

* If this equipment is tampered with or damaged in any way, such as a spilled drink onto the unit, it could cause the passenger side airbag to deploy, the weight of the passenger notwithstanding

In total, there are around 190,000 2007-2009 Hyundai Elantra sedans affected by this recall. These vehicles were built from the 14th of July, 2006 to the 1st of November, 2008.

In addition to the passenger side airbag issue, about 96,000 of these Elantras will receive unrelated service to repair a problem that could cause the driver's side airbag to deploy if the seat is positioned wrongly.

The Hyundai Elantra recall is officially expected to begin in early April. The customers will have their Hyundai sedans fixed at no cost to them, at Hyundai dealer service centers.

Toyota Recalls Vehicles Over Tire Pressure Monitors

Washington Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling 22,000 SUVs and pickups that have faulty tire pressure monitoring systems. This news is as announced in the latest safety campaign issued by the Japanese automaker.

This new recall includes vehicles of the 2008-2011 year models for Toyota FJ Cruiser, Land Cruiser, Sequoia, Tacoma and Tundra vehicles.

According to the NHTSA, the tire pressure monitoring systems were not re-calibrated correctly and therefore do not start illuminating the low tire pressure warning telltale at the required minimum activation pressure.

Dealers will re-initialize the tire pressure monitoring system free of cost to the consumers.

Toyota hasn't decided on a recall schedule yet.
