You don't have to cover them up, but I would make sure that the load is secure, even if it's just with some thin rope from Wal*Mart or Home Depot.

Most areas have an ordinance about travelling with an insecure load in/on a vehicle, but I move boxes with my truck all the time uncovered. You just need to watch for something that could fall out and cause an accident.
