Q&A: When u say “Buy an American truck”, do u mean a Mexican-built Chevy Silverado or American-built Toyota Tundra.?

Question by Oblio: When u say "Buy an American truck", do u mean a Mexican-built Chevy Silverado or American-built Toyota Tundra.?
About half of Chevy Silverados are built in a foreign county (Canada and Mexico). The Toyota Tundra is all American-built in Texas, employing American workers, here in the USA. The money the Toyota workers earn is spent in America. So, which truck is really more "American"? (Make sure your answer follows the community guidelines.)

  2. Good question. Most consumers should be aware of where the goods they buy are maid. A lot of US companies have out of the country factories or sources for goods. The Unfair trade law has put too many people out of work.

  3. You’ll get no argument from me that the global auto business has changed the rules for what used to be a simple “foreign vehicle” description. With Mercedes, BMW, Honda, Toyota, Kia, Suburu, and many more foreign manufacturers employing hundreds of thousands of Americans it is easy to say that we are supporing the US with any vehicle built in this country. The question to be asked however is “where do the profits go?”

  4. when people say buy american they’re refering to something that was origainally made in america when the vehicle was first manufactured. which would mean ford, chevy, or dodge. toyota was never made in america it’s just assembled here. which in turn means it’ll never be american. and chevy’s worthless anyway so i’d never buy one of them cheap heaps.

  5. Do you mean a Japanese truck assembled in the United States using Japanese parts?

Where do the profits from these trucks go?

    To Japan

The Japanese companies that assemble vehicles in the United States do not allow union labor. They do this to save money. They pay less and give fewer benefits to their workers. They have no representation in any labor disputes.

Now consider this. As I said before, the Japanese companies do not allow labor unions to save money. However their vehicles cost just as much and a union made American vehicles. So where are these savings going? To Japan. How do you feel making some Japanese person rich?

By the way, your question includes incomplete information. Yes, some Silverados are made in Mexico. But they are also made in Flint Michigan and Fort Wayne Indiana

  6. Honestly that is a very good question and I would say that getting a tundra would help the “eco” more than getting a truck that was made in other countries. If u get a tundra that was made here it helps the americans that were working on it which like u said helps us bc they spend money here. But everyone will say we r wrong bc its a truck not from here. “Buy american” “ford, dodge, chevy”…

  7. The Toyota Tundra was designed and made for the US market. The Tundra is not just assembled here, it’s designed, built and tested here in the United States. Look at the parts content of the Tundra. Over 80% of parts used in the Tundra are made by US suppliers. !!THEY’RE NOT IMPORTED FROM JAPAN!! That’s more than almost every truck, car, or van sold here in the US.

    And about profits…

I’ll send my money to a Japanese car company that creates billions of dollars and thousands of jobs for Americans before I send my money to a bankrupt company run by the government and UAW pigs that kill American jobs and send them to foreign countries.

  8. Even though the Chev Silverado’s are built in Canada and Mexico, GM is still an American company and the profits they make return to Detroit where as the Toyota Tundra, although made in America, is owned by a Japanese company, so therefore the profits return to Japan. We have plenty of Toyota’s and Honda’s built in Canada, and no matter where they are assembled they are still Japanese cars built by Japanese companies.

As for the GM pick-up trucks, GM plans on pulling them out of Canada and assembling them in the US. Also Ford has no plans to redesign and continue with the Canadian built Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis and the Lincoln Town Car, they will scrap these cars after 2011 and close down the St. Thomas Ontario assembly plant. Due to Canada’s rising dollar, the Big Three have no incentives for manufacturing cars here anymore. It may be in the future there will be more cars built in the USA.

  9. I think that this could have been asked in a better way. When people say “Buy an American truck”, they could be very well referring to who designed the truck and where the company is based. Just because they are assembled in other countries does not mean they are not american. Its called outsourcing. The statement that should go with the point you are trying to make would be “I buy American made products” or something to that effect. Just a little side note for those of you Dodge fans thinking that they are “American Trucks”, keep in mind that Dodge is owned by Chrysler (which is a German company). Choo lose ;) . Just for the record, I am a die hard Chevy guy.

  10. Chevrolets are still more American. Most of the parts are built in the United States and then shipped to a foreign country where they can be assembled more cost-effectively. The finished product is shipped back to us. The money made when the vehicles produced goes to GM headquarters in Detroit. With Toyota, the parts are all from Japan and the money made goes back to Japan, other than what the employees get paid. Chevrolet’s are definitely more American.
